Betta, also known as Cupang, is a character created by YonKaGor and featured in Waterland.
Personality
In their debut song titled Waterland, they are shown reminiscing about their time in their homeland. Betta seems to long to be back in their homeland, but is 'unsure of their return' and seems painfully nostalgic.
Appearance
Betta is a furry white cat with dark blue fur on the inside of their ears, bangs, wrists down, and tail tip. Betta is wears a typical high school Indonesian school outfit, with a blue tie, name badge and school badge. They also wear a hoodie around their waist, with Betta fish patterns on the inside, along with blue pants and dark blue shoes. They hold betta fish in a plastic bag.
Trivia
- Betta's character was revealed on the same day as Speckle's MakeShip plushie drop (August 10th, 2024).
- Betta's name references the species of fish being held in Betta's bag (the Siamese fighting fish, also referred to as the betta), which is also known as Ikan Cupang in Indonesia, hence the name on the tag on the shirt. Their name could also be a play on the old Indonesian word "Beta" meaning "I".
- "Cupang" is pronounced Choo-Pahng.
- The barcode on their school badge reads "0515", which may refer to the word OSIS, which is the acronym for Student Council in Indonesia.
- YonKaGor has stated that Betta's queerness can be interpreted as an "egg" (Queer slang for a transgender person who has not yet realized they're transgender).[1]
